Resources for Older Adults and Caregivers

Alzheimer’s Association -A source for obtaining information regarding daily care, stages and behaviors, support, care options, safety along with financial and legal planning.

Caregiver Action Network – A non-profit organization providing education, peer support, and resources to family caregivers across the country free of charge.

Preventing Elder Abuse, Assault and Theft – This site provides excellent, down-to-earth information on how to identify elder abuse, how to prevent it, and how to respond if any for of abuse is suspected. 

Family Caregiver Alliance – The services, education programs, and resources FCA provides are designed with caregivers’ needs in mind and offer support, tailored information, and tools to manage the complex demands of caregiving.

Five Wishes – A private, non-profit organization with a mission to safeguard the human dignity of people as they age or face serious illness. Our Five Wishes advance directive or living will help people plan in advance of a serious illness.

Georgia Care Planning Council – The council is a single listing source of community care providers and advisers.

Ten Things You Should Know @ Aging with Dignity & Independence – Publications offered by the SCAN Foundation regarding aging with dignity and independence.

The National Consumer Voice for Quality Long-term Care – Offers resources and information for consumers on how to achieve quality long-term care in nursing homes and assisted living as well as Home and Community-Based care services.

National Alliance for Caregiving – The Alliance conducts research, does policy analysis, develops national best-practice programs, and works to increase public awareness of family caregiving issues.

Physician Orders for Life-Sustaining Treatment (POLST) – Physician Orders for Life-Sustaining Treatment helps patients get the medical treatments they want, and avoid the medical treatments they do not want, when they are seriously ill or frail.

Resources for Nutrition Service Providers

Food Is Medicine Coalition is an association of nonprofit medically tailored food and nutrition service providers who believe that public policy based on an understanding that food is medicine will be a win for healthcare and for the well-being of those who are sick, poor and malnourished. Members provide direct service to critically and chronically ill people in their communities, while FIM advanced public policy to support services, promotes research on the efficacy of food and nutrition services on health outcomes and cost of care (and publishes the findings on their website), and shares best practices for providers to apply in their communities.

Meals on Wheels America is the oldest and largest national organization supporting the more than 5,000 community-based senior nutrition programs across the country that are dedicated to addressing senior hunger and isolation. Meals on Wheels Association of Georgia is a MOWA State Affiliate. They focus on research, advocacy, and providing education, planning, and financial support for their members.

National Institute for Senior Centers is a membership institute of NCOA committed to supporting and strengthening the nation’s 11,00 senior centers through best practices, professional development, advocacy, research, and national standards and accreditation. While some resources are reserved for members, senior center program ideas, webinars, and National Senior Center month materials are free to all centers.

National Aging Organizations

AARP – A nonprofit organization that focuses on policies and issues reflecting their members’ concerns such as financial security, health care, long-term care, community and improving the quality of life for all as they age. Become a member and receive an informative monthly magazine for seniors as well as online tools for education, planning, and resources.

Administration for Community Living ( formerly the Administration on Aging) is he principal agency of the U.S Department of Health and Human Services designated to carry out the provisions of the Older Americans Act of 1965 (OAA) which undergirds aging services such as senior center, meals on wheels, caregiver support, Aging And Disability Resource Networks, State Units on Aging, and more.

The Eldercare Locator is a public service tool provided by ACL to connect you to services for older adults and their families.

American Society on Aging (ASA) – An association committed to enhancing the knowledge and skills of those who seek to improve the quality of life of older adults and their families, offering professional education, publications and online information and training resources.

National Aging in Place Council (NAIPC) – A support network of professionals from the private, public and non-profit sectors who can help you plan for your future housing and care needs.

National Council on Aging (NCOA) – Partnering with nonprofit organizations, government, and businesses to provide innovative community programs and services, online help, professional development opportunities, and advocacy for people age 60+.

US Department of Housing and Urban Development Senior Citizen’s Resources – Housing resources and guides for Senior Citizens and persons with disabilities from HUD.

Georgia-specific Resources

Aging and Disability Resource Center (ADRC) – Georgia’s ADRCs serve older individuals, individuals with disabilities of all ages, families, caregivers and professionals by linking them to services they need.

Alzheimer’s Association- GA Chapter – The Alzheimer’s Association works on a global, national and local level to provide care and support for all those affected by Alzheimer’s and other dementias. Their website has many resources as well as planning tools.

Center for Positive Aging – A clearing house of resources, products and services for older adults.

Department of Community Health (DCH) – One of Georgia’s four health agencies and serves as the lead agency for Medicaid and Georgia’s Waiver programs for Elder Care. The Department also oversees Healthcare Facility Regulation in Skilled-Care Facilities and Assisted Living Facilities/Personal Care Homes. DCH’s programs provide access to health care services.

DHS Division of Aging Services (DAS) – The Georgia Department of Human Services (DHS) Division of Aging Services (DAS) supports the larger goals of DHS by assisting older individuals, at-risk adults, persons with disabilities, their families and caregivers to achieve safe, healthy, independent and self-reliant lives. Their website includes information on how to report elder abuse, list of programs and services, how to get involved, publications and a list of and links to Area Agencies on Aging around the state.

Georgia Adult Day Services Association – Find providers, become a member, and learn about adult day service programs as well as their licensing standards and regulations.

Georgia Long Term Care Ombudsman – The Office of the State Long-Term Care Ombudsman seeks to improve the quality of life for residents of long-term care facilities by representing the resident when asked, advocacy at the local and state level, and routine on-site visits to all skilled care facilities and personal care homes in Georgia.

Georgia Senior Living Association – A non-profit trade association representing Georgia’s senior living industry and the growing population it serves. GSLA members range from freestanding assisted living residences and licensed personal care homes to retirement campuses where assisted living may be a component. Good Pill Pharmacy – Good Pill Pharmacy is a Georgia nonprofit that provides affordable medicine to people with high medication costs, whether your insurance copays or deductibles are too high or you don’t have insurance. Good Pill is stocked with surplus medicine and asks patients to contribute $6 for a 90-day supply of most generic medications to help cover our operating costs.
